Child Abuse Prevention Council of Placer County
The Child Abuse Prevention Council of Placer County is a nonprofit
agency, formed in 1988, devoted to the prevention and healing of
child abuse in all its forms. Through our Children’s Crisis
Nursery and Family Resource Centers in Roseville, Auburn and Foresthill,
the Council provides services that are critical to the health and
well being of children. The Council is governed by volunteer community
leaders and children's agency professionals.
Facts about child abuse:
- Every 47 seconds a child is abused.
- Three million children are reported abused every year across
the nation.
- Child abuse reports in California tripled in the last decade,
to over 800,000 per year.
- In Placer County, almost 6,000 child abuse reports are opened
annually – an increase of almost 200 percent since 1990.
The generous support of the SureWest Foundation helps the Council
provide the following services to our community:
Children’s Crisis Nursery: providing a safe
haven for children under the age of six, whose parents are experiencing
a crisis.
Child Abuse and Abduction Prevention Education Program:
teaching second- and fifth-grade students in local schools how to
stay safe from abuse or abduction.
Family Resource Centers: providing children and
families with counseling opportunities, parenting classes, in-home
visitations and a connection for other critical resources.

Sierra Adoption Services
Sierra Adoption Services is a nonprofit adoption agency with a unique
mission. We specialize in finding permanent, adoptive homes for
children growing up in foster care ... children with tragic histories
of abuse, neglect and abandonment. In the greater Sacramento region,
there are over 2,700 orphans who have lost their parents to abuse,
neglect abandonment and death. Through no fault of their own, they
are waiting in our foster care system for families who are willing
to adopt them and love them forever.
Our mission is to break the cycle of abuse by providing permanent
adoptive families for California’s waiting children, with
an emphasis on those with special needs; and to promote a climate
which supports successful adoptions through services and advocacy.
“Getting adopted is like sitting down after standing
up for a very long time.”
Tommy, age 8
Facts about waiting children:
- Every 24 hours in the greater Sacramento community, 10 children
are removed from their homes and taken from their birth parents,
due to cases of neglect, abuse, abandonment and/or illegal activity.
- Approximately six out of every 1,000 U.S. children under the
age of 18 are in foster care.
- In the greater Sacramento community, more than 2,000 children
are waiting for homes where they can stay forever.
- The National Prison Project reports that 90 percent of men
in prison today either grew up in foster care, were abandoned
by birth parents or were abused.

Tommy Apostolos Fund
The Tommy Apostlos Fund was established in 1988, in memory of Tommy
Apostolos, a long time Roseville resident and a 30+year employee
of Roseville Telephone Company.
This nonprofit organization raises funds to purchase
clothing for Roseville school children through a special program
coordinated by Surewest Communications Company, Roseville Police
Association, and the Apostolos Family. One hundred percent (100%)
of the money raised goes directly to these children who are selected
from underprivileged or low income families within the local community.
The children are given an open credit (usually $100/each) to purchase
clothing at Mervyns Department Store. The shopping sprees are held
twice annually: once for “Back to School” in August
and again at Christmas.
The Tommy Apostolos Fund perpetuates the memory of Tommy Apostolos—a
caring, warmhearted man who gave much to his family and community.
Through the generosity of many volunteers and contributors to this
extremely worthwhile community project, the Tommy Apostolos Fund
is able to purchase clothing for over 600 children every year.
